Ukrainian People's Deputy and former head of the Institute of National Remembrance, Volodymyr Viatrovych, has sent a letter to Yurii Vilkul, the acting mayor of Kryvyi Rih, as well as to the leaders of the deputy factions in the city council regarding the scandal surrounding the construction of a memorial in Kryvyi Rih, as reported by "Vydomo".
Recently, tensions have escalated concerning the memorial's construction, as the relatives of fallen soldiers are struggling to reach an agreement with the city authorities on fundamental issues.
According to the deputy, families are turning to him because they disagree with the city council's decision project, which proposes to allocate 50,000 hryvnias from the city budget for each family to independently install gravestones.
"This proposal, in their view, shifts the responsibility for creating the memorial cemetery onto the families and could undermine the concept of uniformity, which distinguishes a military cemetery from a civilian one," the letter states.
At the same time, Viatrovych urged the city authorities to announce an open architectural competition at the national level.
"I call for the adoption of European standards in memorialization: to organize a nationwide architectural competition for the design of a military cemetery and to fund its construction, in order to honorably commemorate every individual who gave their life for Ukraine's freedom," the deputy emphasized.
