According to the American leader, the European Union has "really taken advantage of the USA" because it did not accept either American cars or agricultural products. Trump believes that the USA "takes everything from them – from millions of cars to a vast amount of food and agricultural goods."
When asked by the BBC if there are specific deadlines for announcing tariffs on the EU, Trump responded that he "wouldn't say there is a specific timeline, but it will happen very soon."
The president also added that the United States has endured "economic damage from almost all countries of the world" and that this has been "unfair."
At the same time, the European Union stated that it would provide a "decisive" response if President Trump imposes tariffs on European goods, according to France 24 citing a spokesperson for the European Commission. He noted that Brussels regrets the actions of the USA, which could lead to economic chaos and rising inflation.
Additionally, the EU emphasized that it is prepared to respond firmly to any trading partner that unjustly or without cause imposes tariffs on European products, the publication reports.
