A new and unusual resident has appeared in the Prybrezhny Park of Dnipro, which locals have already nicknamed the "Dnipro Capybara." Rumors about it have quickly spread throughout the city, generating genuine interest and numerous discussions on social media. It all started with posts by Maxim Kovalenko, the head of the Dnipro kayaking center, who shared photos and videos of the mysterious creature.
The footage shows a creature resembling a large muskrat in size and behavior, actively exploring the fortified shore of the park.
Changes in the landscape may have attracted this new park resident—previously, the shore was gentler and overgrown, providing fewer suitable nesting spots. Now, the gravel covering has created unique shelters and niches that have likely become appealing for the muskrat.
The comparison to a capybara, although humorous, is not without merit. The muskrat is indeed a distant relative of this South American rodent, the largest in the world. However, the size of the "Dnipro Capybara" is significantly smaller, ruling out the possibility of a true capybara appearing in Dnipro.
The climatic conditions of our region are entirely unsuitable for the survival of this tropical animal. Capybaras are inhabitants of swampy areas with a warm climate, and Dnipro, even in summer, cannot provide them with a comfortable existence.
It is quite likely that this is just a temporary settlement, and the muskrat will soon relocate to a more suitable habitat.
Earlier, we reported that a raccoon was spotted walking in Dnipro again.
