This isn't about a stream flowing through the outskirts of the city; it's about a genuine river.

In the city of Dnipro, the secrets of another small river flowing within the urban area have been uncovered — the River Rechishche. This small yet historically significant waterway runs through the territory of the village of Sukachevka, holding within its waters and along its banks mysteries that researcher Alexander Yaroshenko has gradually revealed. His photos and stories shed light on the river's complex fate, its evolution, and its connection to the grand events of the 20th century that directly impacted the landscape of Dnipro and its surroundings. This was reported by "Vidomo."

The River Rechishche is not merely a stream running along the outskirts of the city. It is a living witness to history, its flow reflecting the dramatic changes that have occurred in Dnipro over the past centuries.

As Yaroshenko notes, the current course of the River Rechishche differs significantly from what existed before the large-scale engineering works on the Dnipro. The present appearance of this river is the result of changes that mainly took place in the 20th century due to the construction and destruction of the DniproHES. Before the construction of the DniproHES (Dniprorest), it had a different, longer, and more powerful course. However, after the dam was commissioned in 1932, the water level in the Dnipro rose sharply, disrupting the natural flow. The river effectively broke apart into a system of lakes and swamps along its old course. This transformation is clearly documented on the 1934 map, which vividly illustrates the fragmentation of the watercourse.

Subsequent events added even more drama to the history of Rechishche. In 1941, Chekists blew up the DniproHES dam, restoring the flow of the Dnipro. However, it was only temporary. The Germans rebuilt the dam in 1942, but in 1943, during their retreat, they blew it up again. This cycle of destruction and restoration had a colossal impact on the formation of the modern course of Rechishche.

Yaroshenko himself suggests that it was during the period from 1943 to 1947, while the DniproHES dam was in a state of destruction and then gradually being restored, that the modern and current course of the river was formed.

Today, remnants of the old course of Rechishche can be found in various corners of Sukachevka. These include the lakes of Salafanovka and Chabirovka, as well as long marshy areas below Narvskaya Street and around Pridorozhny Lane. Even the abandoned wastewater treatment facilities are, in essence, mute witnesses to the former grandeur and strength of the river. These places, captured in the photographs of Alexander Yaroshenko, allow us to imagine what the course of Rechishche looked like before human intervention, before the large-scale changes that reshaped the landscape.
