In Dnipro, a local photographer captured a tiny bird – the golden-crowned kinglet. He shared the photos in the Facebook community "Birds of Ukraine," as reported by "Vidomo".
The golden-crowned kinglet was photographed while perched on a spruce branch. This charming little bird is yellow-gray in color, featuring a bright amber crown and black dot-like eyes.
Fluffy. It's cold, warming up like this… But they weren't hungry, as they weren't in the dining area all the time. A bit of posing too. Golden-crowned kinglet. Dnipro. 24.11.24,” – captioned the photos by photographer Yuriy Mukhin.
The golden-crowned kinglet migrates across the entire territory of Ukraine but mainly nests in Polesie, the Carpathians, and the Crimean mountains. This bird is often spotted on spruces and pines.
Golden-crowned kinglets are the smallest birds in Ukraine, weighing 5-7 g and measuring about 9 cm in length. The adult male is olive-green on top; the wing coverts have two narrow yellowish stripes, and the flight and tail feathers are dark; the beak is black-brown;
When they are agitated, their yellow feathers fluff up, forming a small crown.
They feed on spiders, small beetles, cicadas, wasps, flies, springtails, thrips, mosquitoes, bark beetles, and so on. They also consume conifer seeds in small amounts.
Due to their small size and high metabolic rate, golden-crowned kinglets must constantly search for food, even while engaging in conspicuous singing or nest building.
Furthermore, their lifespan is quite short: on average 2 years, with a recorded maximum of 5.
