A well-known photographer and researcher from Dnipro region, Anatoliy Salnyk, captured images of the Montagu's harrier, a predatory bird from the family Accipitridae, in the genus Circus. He published the photographs on Facebook, as reported by "Vidomo".
The published images showcase the bird in flight during a hunt. It glides low and quietly above the ground, allowing it to stealthily approach its prey.
"November 17, 2024, east of Kryvyi Rih. Male Montagu's harrier hunting. Red Book of Ukraine. Apologies for the quality; the weather was uncooperative!” – wrote Anatoliy Salnyk.
The Montagu's harrier is a rare nesting bird listed in the Red Book of Ukraine. The male is colored gray or light slate on top, with the same hue on its chest and a white belly.
It is one of the few raptors that builds nests on the ground. They choose dense vegetation, such as reeds or tall grass, which provides protection for their eggs and chicks.
